Background Information 
Professional profile:
Dr Paul Kalra graduated in 1992 from Cambridge University. Having passed MRCP in 1995, he undertook cardiology specialist training in Wessex. He spent two years at the National Heart Lung Institute and Royal Brompton Hospitals, London to further clinical and research interest in chronic heart failure.

Dr Kalra started as Consultant Cardiologist at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust in April 2004. Whilst he has a broad interest in all aspects of general adult cardiology including diagnostic catheterization, pacing, echo (transthoracic and transoesophageal), his sub-specialty interest remains the management of patients with heart failure.

He maintains an active research interest and has >50 peer reviewed publications. In addition to local and national collaborative projects, Dr Kalra is the UKs Principle Investigator for an international randomized study evaluating the treatment of anaemia in patients with heart failure.

He is interested in medical education and chairs the cardiology session at regular national CPD meetings for general medical consultants and SpRs. He was co-organiser of the UKs first national Cardio-Renal Conference in 2006. Dr Kalra has recently edited a cardiology text book ‘Specialist Training in Cardiology’ which was Highly Commended in the 2006 BMA Medical Book Competition.
Personal profile:
My main interests outside medicine include football, cricket, tennis and golf (all continuing active participation) and rugby (spectator). With my wife Siân and son Sam I also enjoy spending time walking and cycling and reading literature for the under 1’s!.
