Having trained at St George's Hospital in Tooting, London, Professor Cummings undertook various training posts in Southern England before becoming a research fellow and then a lecturer in diabetes and endocrinology at St Thomas' Hospital, London. His main research interest was lipid abnormalities and vascular risk.
He was appointed consultant in diabetes and endocrinology at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth in 1996 and awarded Honorary Reader Status with Portsmouth University in 2000.
