At Spire Portsmouth Hospital our regionally acclaimed orthopaedic service features a team of specialist orthopaedic consultant surgeons, highly trained nursing and theatre staff, physiotherapists, consultant radiologists and an in-house diagnostic suite.

Our team of highly experienced orthopaedic surgeons treat a wide range of complex conditions using advanced surgical techniques and up to date equipment. All of our consultants are GMC registered and hold specialist posts within the local NHS.
We have three operating theatres, two of which are equipped with a special ventilation filtration system called a laminar flow. This ventilation system provides a very clean environment for orthopaedic joint procedurees, thereby reducing the risk of infection. All of our major orthopaedic joint operations are undertaken in these theatres.
We pride ourselves on cleanliness and our standards of infection control, so much so that there have been no cases of MRSA or C Difficile infection in the hospital.
Joint surgery
In 2009, Spire Portsmouth Hospital performed over 2285 orthopaedic operations. This includes the unicompartmental knee replacement, performed by expert knee surgeons Mr Niall Flynn and Mr Andrew Cossey and the Signature™ personalised knee system performed by Mr Hugh Clarke.
We offer a range of hip surgery operations including joint replacement, revision joint replacement, arthroscopy and hip resurfacing. These procedures are performed by Mr Hugh Clarke, Mr Andy Langdown, Mr Les Cannon, Mr Martin Grover, Mr Chris Hand, Mr Rob Richards and Mr Graham Hill.
Our specialist knee and hip consultants treat sports professionals as well as patients from the local community and are highly regarded by local GPs and physiotherapists for primary joint replacement, arthroscopy and associated treatments.
Spinal surgery
Patients travel from across the south coast to see innovative spinal surgeons Mr Magnus McLaren and Mr Jason Harvey. Mr McLaren and Mr Harvey are at the forefront of minimally invasive spinal surgery using balloon kyphoplasty (treatment for vertebral compression fractures) and the X-Stop procedure for lumbar spinal stenosis.
Upper and lower limb surgery
Mr Simon Hodkinson, Mr Les Cannon and Mr Billy Jowett make up the Spire Portsmouth Hospital’s team of expert lower limb consultants, specialising in ankle and foot surgery. We also have two leading upper limb surgeons - Mr Gareth Harper and Mr Duncan Watkinson, specialising in shoulder, elbow and sports injuries.
Complementing the team, are highly skilled surgeons Miss Sarah Stapley and Mr Chris Hobbs who specialise in hand surgery for conditions including carpal tunnel syndrome, dupuytren’s contracture and joint replacement for rheumatoid arthritis.
