The offiical opening of our cancer treatment centre took place on Tuesday 13 October, the first private facility of its' kind outside London.
Opened by the great British adventurer Sir Ranulph Fiennes, whose has experienced prostate cancer and the loss of his wife and two sisters to the disease.
Sir Ranulph said:
"I've had cancer myself and had this treatment been available, I would have had it. I'm very jealous of the people who are able to be treated here.
The key with this technology is accuracy. To be able to target the enemy with such precision is just fantastic.
I just think this centre is great. It's an amazing facility and gives people confidence.
People in this area are very fortunate to have this centre on their doorstep"
With the opening of the new Radiotherapy centre, Spire Portsmouth Hospital has become the first independent unit outside London where patients can have all their treatment designed around their individual needs and provided in one location. From the initial consultation, all diagnostic tests, surgery, chemotherapy and now radiotherapy can be provided at the same site.
The centre has opened in partnership with CancerPartnersUK, an independent organisation consisting of cancer experts committed to improving the overall quality and availability of cancer services across the UK. The radiotherapy centre houses a linear accelerator, which offers the latest generation technologies.
The radiotherapy machines can create high quality 3D images of cancerous tumours immediately prior to treatment, enabling the machines to deliver extremely accurate targeted doses of radiation into affected areas whilst avoiding surrounding healthy tissue and organs.
In addition, a refurbished oncology suite now offers the latest in chemotherapy treatment for a wide variety of malignant disease, including most solid tumours and cancers of the blood.
