Ear pinning

If you feel your ears stick out too much or are too large, ear pinning, also known as pinnaplasty or otoplasty, can reshape your ears and make them less prominent. For more information about pinnaplasty for men, please click here.

Prominent ears can be corrected with a simple surgical procedure or with an earFoldTM, a minimally invasive procedure with immediate results.

What to expect

Ear correction is a commonly performed procedure and when you meet with your consultant you can discuss the specific changes you are hoping to achieve. Your consultant will explain the results you can expect from the surgery and will discuss any risks and alternatives to the procedure before you decide to go ahead.

Your pinnaplasty surgery will involve re-shaping, folding, or removing some of the cartilage from your ear via a small insertion at the back of the ear. Stitches are then used to hold the ear back in its new position.

The surgery normally takes one to two hours and you’ll usually be able to return home later the same day. It can be performed under general anaesthetic, which means you will be asleep during the procedure, or under local anaesthetic when the area will be numb but you will be awake. If you are having a local anaesthetic, you may also be offered a sedative to help you relax.

After your surgery you will usually be able to go home the same day and will be able to return to work after about a week.

Your final check up with your consultant is usually two months after surgery, although further after-care appointments are available, at no extra charge, if required.
