Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)

Getting older, sun damage and simply the stresses of daily life all have an effect on our faces, sometimes leaving our eyes looking tired and older than we feel.

If you have droopy eyelids or bags under your eyes, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is a popular procedure that can help smooth these out to give you a more alert and youthful appearance. This procedure can be carried out on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both.

Blepharoplasty cannot, however, remove crow’s feet or change the colour of dark shadows under the eyes. If you want to improve the appearance of crow’s feet and other wrinkles around the eye socket, we offer other cosmetic procedures such as anti-wrinkle injections or a brow lift.

What to expect

When you meet with your consultant you can discuss the changes you are hoping to achieve. Your consultant will explain the results you can expect from the surgery and will discuss the associated risks and alternatives to the procedure before you decide to go ahead.

Your blepharoplasty surgery is performed under a general anaesthetic, so you will be asleep. The operation can last for two hours depending on the procedures chosen.

After your surgery you may be able to leave the same day or stay in hospital for a night or two. You may have some bruising and swelling for up to three weeks after the operation. This might make your eyes feel tight and difficult to close when you go to sleep.

You will need to plan time off work so that you can recover at home and can usually return to work after a couple of weeks.

You will have a number of follow up appointments for dressings and check-ups and your final check-up with your consultant is usually two months after surgery, although further after-care appointments are available, at no extra charge, if required.
