Breast enlargement

If you want bigger or more shapely breasts, or are unhappy with the way that they have changed after pregnancy or weight loss, then breast enlargement surgery may be right for you.

Surgery can enhance the shape and size of your breasts and enhance your body shape. It can help to balance a difference in breast size (breast asymmetry) or improve loss of breast volume.

Breast enlargement surgery is a popular cosmetic procedure and can boost self-esteem and confidence.

What to expect

When you meet with your consultant you can discuss what you are hoping to achieve and the size and shape you would like your breasts to be. Our consultants aim to achieve an ‘un-operated appearance’ so that your breasts are natural looking and feeling.

A variety of breast implants are available to choose from, with two types of filler and your consultant will advise you on the options:

  • Silicone implants - These have a firm feel which some consider to be the most realistic to the touch.
  • Saline implants - These can be deflated when they are inserted, meaning the incision size can be smaller and less conspicuous

You will be able to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each type of breast implant before deciding which is best for your breast enlargement. Spire Portsmouth Hosptial only ever use the highest quality implants from reputable suppliers.

You should take time making your decision and may choose to meet with your consultant several times before going ahead with your surgery. Your surgery will usually take one to two hours and is carried out under general anaesthetic so you will be asleep for the duration of the procedure.

After your breast enlargement surgery you will need to stay in hospital for a one or two days. You will also need to wear a special supportive bra for several weeks to help the breasts ‘settle down’ and help you feel more comfortable. You will be mobile straight away but need to plan a couple of weeks off work so that you can recover.

What are the risks associated with this type of surgery?

Breast enlargement is a commonly performed and generally safe operation. For most people, the benefits are greater than the disadvantages. However, all operations carry risks as well as benefits.

Complications specific to breast enlargement include infection, which
may need to be treated with additional antibiotics, and sometimes further surgery.

Changes in sensation are quite common. Different parts of the breasts, including the nipple, can become more or less sensitive than before. This is usually temporary, but occasionally lasts up to six months, and numbness can be permanent.

Another potential complication is capsular contracture, when a layer of scar tissue hardens around the implant causing the breast to feel hard. The implant may need to be removed and, if you wish, replaced with another one.

There’s also a risk of rupture, where a split or hole develops in the shell of the implant. The implant will need to be removed. Modern implants (those used in the UK since the early ‘90s) appear to rupture less frequently than older ones.

As with any cosmetic procedure it is important that you review your expectations thoroughly with your surgeon before you decide to proceed.

The chance of complications depends on the exact type of operation you are having and other factors such as your general health. Ask your surgeon to explain in more detail how any risks apply to you.
