You may have succeeded in losing weight through diet and exercise but still have areas where fat seems impossible to shift, liposuction could be the answer.

Liposuction procedures reshape the body by permanently removing fatty deposits. Stubborn fat that is difficult to shift through diet or exercise often occurs on the tummy, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees and chin.

Achieving a slimmer and smoother silhouette can boost your confidence, make you feel more in proportion and help you look and feel good in the clothes you want to wear.

Liposuction can also be combined with other procedures such as a tummy tuck or face lift to help you achieve the results you want.

Jenni had her liposuction procedure at the Portsmouth Cosmetic Clinic and was delighted with the results – read Jenni’s story.

What to expect

When you meet with your consultant you can discuss the changes you are hoping to achieve and they will advise which approach is right for you. Your consultant will explain the results you can expect from liposuction and will discuss the associated risks and alternatives to the procedure before you decide to go ahead.

Your liposuction procedure involves a small incision being made in the skin to allow a vacuum pump or syringe to be inserted. A fluid mixture is injected to make it easier for the fat cells to be removed. Fatty tissue is sucked out and the cut is then closed with stitches.

After your liposuction procedure you may be able to go home the same day or stay overnight in the hospital depending on the treatment chosen.

You will need to wear a support garment for the first six weeks after the procedure. You will feel a little sore for a few days and may find substantial bruising in the involved area. You will probably need to take some time off work to rest and recover.

You will see an immediate benefit after the treatment but it takes some months for the full benefits of the liposuction to become visible as swelling settles down and your skin adjusts to its new shape.

The results of liposuction can be long-lasting if you maintain a healthy body weight and exercise regularly, but of course gaining more weight may reverse the effects of your liposuction.
