Mr Robert Sutcliffe studied medicine at Downing College, Cambridge, qualifying in 1995. Aftercompleting basic surgical training at the Royal Free Hospital, London, he undertook a period of research studying primary liver cancer at King’s College Hospital, which led to the award of MD. He undertook general surgery specialist registrar training in Brighton, Medway and London, and then spent two years in specialist fellowship posts at King’s College Hospital (hepatobiliary and liver transplant surgery) and the Royal London Hospital (hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery). He was appointed as a substantive NHS Consultant in Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham in January 2011.Robert has an academic interest, and has published widely on topics such as neuroendocrine andcolorectal liver metastases, hepatocellular cancer, surgical training and perioperative care. He is the leading author of the Oxford Specialist Handbook of Liver and Pancreatobiliary Surgery (Oxford University Press). His clinical interests include diseases of the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts, and he has a particular interest in laparoscopic surgery.
I am a keen sportsman, having represented university at both rugby union and water polo. After nearlythirty consecutive seasons, I still continue to enjoy playing rugby on a regular basis. I am also a keenswimmer and cyclist. When not working or on the sport’s field, I enjoy spending time with my family.
