He qualified at Birmingham Medical School in 1981 and undertook specialist surgical training at Great Ormond Street, Royal Brompton Hospital, Queens Square Neuroscience Centre and the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital. Further specialised training in paediatric ENT and adult laryngology was undertaken in Sydney and Bombay.
