Mr Alan Doherty is the founder of the Birmingham Prostate Clinic and has had extensive exposure to radical prostatectomy for early prostate cancer. Mr Doherty was taught by Timothy Christmas (Charing Cross Hospital; over 300 radical prostatectomies), Urs Studer (Berne, Switzerland), Roger Kirby, Christopher Woodhouse (Royal Marsden Hospital) Neil O'Donoghue (Institute of Urology).

Mr Doherty has had recent publications on prostate cancer and PSA in the Lancet and British Journal of Cancer (BJC 2000 Dec; 83(11):1432-6, Lancet 354 (9195): 2053-2054, 1999)

Mr Doherty is currently working at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham with sub-specialist interest in uro-oncology where a one-stop testicular and PSA clinic is provided. In these one-stop visits, patients are assessed, counseled and investigated at the same time. Trans-rectal ultrasound and prostate biopsies or scrotal ultrasound are performed by the urologist who recommends the management of plan.

Mr Alan Doherty has completed numerous research projects into prostate, renal and bladder cancer with some ongoing or in preparation. Other interests include bladder cancer including orthotopic reconstruction, BPH and lower urinary tract symptoms, infertility and andrology.

Mr Doherty has had a great deal of experience in prostate cancer (laparascopic radical prostatectomy 200+ cases, open radical prostatectomy 250+ cases) and is being trained in High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) and cryotherapy. He also has experience in renal cancer (open radical nephrectomy 150+ cases, laparascopic radical nephrectomy 60+ cases) and bladder cancer (radical cystectomy 60+ cases).
