Gabrielle Downey has been a consultant gynaecologist in Birmingham for over 14 years. Her training brought her from Dublin to London where she worked at Queen Charlottes, The Hammersmith and Royal Free Hospitals. Her research led to a MD thesis looking at the role of wart virus infection causing abnormal cervical smears, a link that has led to the national immunisation programme and introduction of HPV testing in the management of cervical abnormalities. This research has resulted in one of her fields of expertise whereby she is accredited to assess and manage abnormal cervical smears. Her role as cancer unit lead at her NHS Hospital means she can see women with suspected gynaecological cancers and ovarian cysts. As a doctor who trained in the “old style” Miss Downey has a broad understanding of most benign gynaecological conditions including period and bladder problems as well as pelvic pain. As a well established consultant she has a network of colleagues she can call upon should additional expertise be required.
When not working Gabrielle looks after a husband, two children and an ever growing number of animals. Her most recent acquisitions being three ex-battery hens that are experiencing the outside world for the first time in their lives. Long may it last, so long as she wins the battle against the clever Mr Fox!
