Professor Milligan qualified in Leeds in 1975 and trained in Leeds and Manchester in internal medicine and haematology. He was clinical tutor in medicine in Leeds and senior registrar in haematology. He moved to Birmingham as a consultant in 1986 to establish a stem cell transplant service.
His clinical interests are in malignant haematology and stem cell transplantation. Professor Milligan is either principal investigator or co-investigator for a number of MRC leukaemia trials. He currently Chairs the UK NCRI Haematology Trials Studies Group. He is Medical Director of the Pan Birmingham Cancer Network.
Professor Milligan is married to a GP, he has two children, both doctors.
His interests outside medicine include golf and gardening.
