I trained at St Thomas' Hospital London qualifying MA, MB BChir (Cantab) in 1966/67. I gained postgraduate experience in orthopaedic medicine, studying under several eminent specialists in manual osteopathic and orthopaedic medicine. After a few years general practice I progressed to full time practice in orthopaedic medicine (now often referred to as musculoskeletal medicine).
My past appointments include President of the Institute of Orthopaedic Medicine 1989-92, President of the British Institute of Musculoskeletal Medicine 1992-98 and Dean of the Institute of Sports Medicine 1988-90. Currently I am Vice President (Immediate past President) of the International Federation for Manual/Musculoskeletal Medicine (FIMM), an examiner for the Diploma of Musculoskeletal Medicine (DipMS Med) and Diploma of Sports Medicine (Society of Apothecaries, London). I have been awarded Diploma (Honoris causa) in musculoskeletal medicine by the Society of Apothecaries.
My textbooks - "Sports Injuries" (OUP), "Back Pain" (Butterworth Heinemann) and "Work Related Upper Limb Disorders" (Butterworth Heinemann) - reflect my clinical interests. A "Textbook of Musculoskeletal Medicine" is in press. I am a member of Academy of Experts, enjoying a busy medicolegal practice. 50% of my clinical workload is the assessment and non-surgical management of spinal and nerve root pain by techniques such as spinal manipulation, epidural injections, paravertebral injections, trigger point therapy and prolotherapy.
I work closely with allied healthcare professionals and have a weekly clinic at BUPA Methley Park Hospital.

I am married with three children. The family has enjoyed living in the country in the past and my wife and I continue to prefer a rural rather than an urban lifestyle. (Our three children now work in London). From school to my forties I played a considerable amount of sport, initially cricket (reaching national standard at youth level), rugby and subsequently golf.

My interests have changed over the last 10 years. My primary cultural interests are music (predominantly opera) and philosophy (particularly the philosophy of science). My wife and I enjoy renovating old houses, and designing and constructing gardens (to National "Gardens Open to the Public" standard).

Having written extensively on medical topics in the past, I hope to be able to pursue my interest in writing, additionally on non-medical matters, when I find more time in the future.
