Spire Manchester Hospital has been accredited a Bariatric Surgery Centre of Excellence by the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO). This is an official European recognition for hospitals that have achieved excellent results (significant weight loss, low complication rate). Our bariatric team and patient support group representatives are very proud of the achievement.
Spire Manchester Hospital is an accredited Bariatric Surgery Centre of Excellence by IFSO

Obesity can lead to serious health problems. It is an independent risk factor for at least 35 common health conditions (co-morbidities) and may lead to significant medical, psychological, social, physical and economic impacts. Bariatric (weight loss) surgery is recognised as an effective treatment for morbidly obese patients, resulting in long-term sustained weight loss which can help to significantly improve health.
Obesity has reached epidemic proportions globally, with more than 1 billion adults overweight and at least 300 million of these clinically obese. In Europe alone, there are over 160 million people with obesity, and the proportion of adults in the UK with a body mass index (BMI) higher than 30 has tripled in the past 2 decades with 24% of the adult population now classed as obese.
Obesity is increasing in all age groups and there has been an alarming increase in the number of cases of obesity induced type 2 diabetes in adolescents and children. If not addressed early, obesity associated co-morbidities can accumulate exponentially throughout life and could lead to an enormous strain on our National Health Service.
About the IFSO accreditation
IFSO (International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders) brings together surgeons and allied health professionals, such as nurse practitioners, dieticians, nutritionists, psychologists and anaesthetists, involved in the treatment of patients with morbid obesity. The main goal of IFSO is to optimise the results of the treatment of patients with obesity.
To be accredited as a bariatric surgery centre of excellence Spire Manchester Hospital has had to demonstrate that:
- All surgeons have a commitment to post-operative life-time follow up
- All surgeons perform at least 50 cases per year including open and laparoscopic revision operations
- All surgeons are involved in the training of less-experienced bariatric surgeons
The hospital has to be able to provide each patient with:
- Specialised nursing care, dietary instruction and counselling
- Psychological assessment (if and when needed)
- Anaesthetists with a high level of experience of bariatric patients
- Experienced interventional radiologists
- On site critical care
- Blood tests available 24hrs a day
- Supervised support group meetings
- At least five years experience of treating bariatric patients
The hospital has to have equipment and furniture throughout the hospital specifically designed for the care and comfort of our bariatric patients. When providing care and support to our bariatric patients maintaining our patients’ dignity is of the upmost importance.
All of these factors help demonstrate that Spire Manchester Hospital is committed to the highest standards in bariatric surgical patient care.
