Liposuction for men

Some men struggle to get the look they want through excercise alone and Spire Manchester Hospital offers cosmetic procedures to help.

Greater numbers of men are having cosmetic surgery to improve their appearance and raise their confidence.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction - commonly known as ‘lipo’ - is a cosmetic surgery procedure that reshapes the male body by permanently removing fatty deposits. Stubborn fat that is difficult to shift through diet or exercise often occurs on the stomach or belly, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees and chin.

The benefits of liposuction

For men who have lost weight through diet and exercise but still have areas where fat seems very difficult to shift, liposuction could be the answer. The benefits that result from ‘lipo’ will depend from patient to patient, however common benefits reported after liposuction surgery include:

  • Reduced body fat
  • Greater self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Feeling good wearing clothes that were previously unsuitable
  • An increased sense that the body is now in proportion

What happens in male liposuction surgery?

There are two main liposuction techniques: wet and dry. Both will normally be performed under general anaesthetic, meaning you will be asleep for the duration of the liposuction procedure. However, if only a small amount of fat is to be removed, a local anaesthetic may be used instead. Depending on the amount of fat to be removed, the operation should last between one and two hours.

Wet liposuction

After the anaesthesia has taken effect, your cosmetic surgeon will inject a fluid mixture made up of a salty solution, local anaesthetic and adrenaline. This helps to reduce bleeding, bruising and swelling, and also makes it easier for the fat cells to be removed.

An incision is made in the skin to allow a vacuum pump or syringe to be inserted. This is moved within the fatty tissue to suck out the fat and fluid. Finally, the cut is closed with stitches.

Dry liposuction

The dry liposuction method does not use an injection of fluid yet does use the suction of a vacuum pump in a similar way to the wet technique. Dry liposuction can often result in more bruising after the operation – your cosmetic surgeon at Spire Healthcare will discuss the best option for your needs.

Liposuction aftercare for men

Fat removal through liposuction is not a treatment for weight loss and should not be considered as an alternative to losing weight through exercise and a healthy diet. You can achieve much better results by having liposuction after hitting your target weight, using it to help smooth out any sagging skin or stubbornly fatty areas.

The results of liposuction can be long-lasting if you maintain a healthy body weight and exercise regularly, but of course gaining more weight may reverse the effects of liposuction.
