Gastric bypass surgery at Spire Manchester Hospital

Reduces the size of your stomach and redirects the digestive tract.

At Spire Manchester Hospital, our highly skilled consultants and expert aftercare team offer gastric bypass surgery to help you lose weight if severe obesity is affecting your health.

During a gastric bypass, your surgeon will reduce the size of your stomach and connect it to the lower part of your small intestine, restricting the calories you can eat and absorb.

Gastric bypass surgery: what to expect at Spire Manchester Hospital

Spire Manchester Hospital offers a comprehensive range of specialist treatments in purpose-built private hospital facilities in Didsbury. We have an expert team of bariatric surgeons (consultants specialising in weight loss surgery) for you to choose from. They can carry out gastric bypass surgery which can help you lose weight if changes to diet and exercise haven't worked. You’ll have a treatment and recovery plan that’s personalised to suit your lifestyle.

Our surgeons work with a team of dietitians and nurses who'll help you throughout your treatment and recovery, so that you get the support you need.

How much does Gastric bypass surgery cost at Spire Manchester Hospital

It's a common operation to have done privately, and our inclusive prices and access to payment plans make it easy and more affordable, even if you don’t have medical insurance.

The price shown is the ‘from price’ (ie the minimum cost of the procedure). Please note that for some procedures the actual price you are quoted may vary significantly and can increase depending on your choice of Consultant (who is an independent practitioner and not an employee of Spire). The fees charged by Consultants and Anaesthetists are set independently and are outside the control of Spire. The price may also vary depending on the type of anaesthetic, implant or drug used, and your medical history.

Spire Manchester Hospital can provide you with a single, fixed price for your procedure so there are no surprises. Please read Spire Healthcare's terms and conditions for full details of what’s included and excluded in your fixed price when paying for yourself. Finance options are available through our partner Omni Capital Retail Finance Ltd, 10 Norwich Street, London, EC4A 1BD.

Talking about gastric bypass surgery

Preparing for gastric bypass surgery at Spire Manchester Hospital

Getting here

The hospital is close to the city centre, with Manchester Piccadilly and Victoria train stations being approximately 20 minutes in a taxi and only 10 minutes from Manchester Airport. We have free parking on-site for you and your visitors.

Consultations

Your first appointment with your consultant will be in one of our 18 consulting rooms. You’ll have a chance to talk about your medical history and the different options for surgery. There’ll be time for any questions you may have and an opportunity to discuss:

  • The procedure and what’s involved - your surgeon may recommend gastric bypass surgery as a first step
  • The treatment costs and what’s included
  • Risks and complications, including the anaesthetic
  • Your personalised aftercare plan and what this involves, including diet and lifestyle changes

Before going ahead with gastric bypass surgery, you’ll meet a dietitian, anaesthetist and bariatric nurse specialist so they can make further assessments on whether surgery is right for you.

You’ll also need to have a pre-operative assessment which may include:

  • An electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Blood tests
  • Blood pressure
  • Pulse

Gastric bypass surgery: your procedure

Your gastric bypass surgery takes one to three hours, but you’ll stay in hospital for one to two days afterwards. You’ll have a comfortable, private room with all the comforts and conveniences you’d expect to find at home, including:

  • TV
  • En-suite
  • Window
  • Armchair
  • Free WiFi

On the day of your operation, there’ll be a chance to meet your anaesthetist and the surgical team. You’ll have a general anaesthetic so you'll be asleep for the operation. The operation involves your surgeon reducing the size of your stomach and connecting it to the lower part of your small intestine.

If you’ve come with a friend or family member, they’re welcome to wait in our lounge or restaurant while you have your operation.

Your aftercare and recovery

During your stay, you’ll be given painkillers for any discomfort. Your nursing team will make sure you have everything you need at all times.

We’ll have follow-up appointments with you after you leave hospital. These will be for two years after your operation, to check that you're recovering as expected. You'll also receive support from a dietitian at appointments every three months and telephone advice is available from both a dietitian and a bariatric nurse.
