Following graduation from medical school in 1986, Mr Murthy embarked on basic surgical training in otolaryngology (head and neck) and general surgery initially in various teaching hospitals in London.

After obtaining his fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in otolaryngology, he started higher surgical training in otolaryngology in East Anglia for two years. During this time Mr Murthy received intensive training in all aspects of otology and rhinology. He then commenced a training rotation in the North of Scotland which supplemented his experience in advanced head and neck surgery including free flap and microvascular reconstruction.

In his final year of training, Mr Murthy undertook a clincal fellowship in head and neck oncology and reconstructive surgery at the University of Miami, Florida.

Since his appointment as a consultant in 1999, Mr Murthy has continued to develop expertise in all aspects of adult and paediatric otolaryngology with particular interest in cancer surgery, thyroid and parotid lesions, and endoscopic sinus surgery.

Mr Murthy is also actively involved in audit, research and teaching of undergraduates, postgraduates and GP (general practitioners).

Mr Murthy has several extra curricular activities outside medicine including travel, music and socialising. He enjoys most sports particularly cricket, tennis and snooker. When the opportunity arises, which unfortunately is seldom nowadays, Mr Murthy enjoys playing chess.

He also is interested in foreign culture and customs, and having lived and worked in United Kingdom, United States and India, he has been fortunate to develop an insight into a variety of rituals and conventions.
