Mr Rothera trained in London and then went on to become the clinical lecturer at the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford. A position he held for four years before moving to the North West in 1987 to work at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and Hope Hospital, Salford.

He undertook general training in all aspects of otorhinolaryngology with sub-specialist interest in paediatric ear, nose and throat surgery and otology.
