Mr Wilson qualified from the Royal London Hospital in 1986. His initial training was based in London and surgical training was carrying out in Manchester. Mr Wilson was appointed as a consultant at Macclesfield District General Hospital and Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport, in 1998. He moved to Christie Hospital, Manchester, and South Manchester University Hospitals in 2000.

His specialist interest is pelvic surgery which includes treatment for advanced and recurrent pelvic malignancies. Mr Wilson treats advanced and recurrent pelvic malignancies with assistance from a multidisciplinary team at Christie Hospital.
