Following graduation from Manchester University in 1989, Professor Byrne has developed a particular interest in cancer, reconstructive and plastic surgery of the breast.

Until 1997, most of his professional life was spent training in general and breast surgery with frequent attachment to plastic surgical units in the West Midlands. He then returned to Manchester to become a full-time researcher into the mechanism by which cancer spreads to other parts of the body. Recommencing clinical practice in October 1998 as lecturer in surgical oncology, Professor Byrne was appointed as a consultant in September 2000. 

Professor Byrne has a particular interest in surgical training and medical education and is the immediate past president of the National Association of Surgeons in Training and the hospital dean for clinical studies at South Manchester Universities Hospitals NHS Trust. He has been involved in designing new educational programmes for doctors for some years. Maintaining an active interest in surgical research, he currently holds several grants for research in cancer and medical education.

Since his appointment as a consultant, Professor Byrne has continued to develop expertise in breast reconstruction operations and is especially keen to promote a team-working approach to the management of breast disease. He is also excited by the prospect of a career of working in Britain's largest breast unit.

In his private practice Professor Byrne performs many cosmetic breast surgical procedures.

Professor Byrne has always maintained an interest in his local community and some years ago co-founded a charity that aims to alleviate difficulties experienced by the homeless.

As a keen reader, Professor Byrne has a particular interest in English, Italian and French history.

Having spent a considerable time in the Indian sub-continent, he has a special interest in South Indian customs and culture.

Professor Byrne has been a competitive amateur golfer since he was a young boy but is finding it increasingly difficult to maintain the skills he acquired many years ago!
