Alan Dickson qualified from The University of Edinburgh in 1977. He undertook his basic Surgical Training in Edinburgh, achieving FRCS in 1982.
Thereafter Alan moved to work as a research fellow in Glasgow for 1 year before moving back to Edinburgh to embark on Paediatric Surgical training for 5 years. He was initially appointed as Registrar then promoted to Senior registrar in 1984, moving to the University of Cape Town Childrens Hospital for 1 year in 1986. Alan received a strong grounding in the breadth of paediatric surgery and became proficient in all aspects of the specialty including neonates, gastroenterology, oncology and urology..
Alan was appointed in 1988 as a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon with a special interest in urology in Manchester. There he practised the whole spectrum of paediatric surgery for over 10 years and then eventually focussed on paediatric urology in 1999.
He is the senior clinician leading the Manchester based national service for Bladder Exstrophy.
Alan’s major clinical interest is in the area of the lower urinary tract including in addition to bladder exstrophy, hypospadias, bladder reconstruction, neuropathic bladder and genital reconstruction.
His extensive clinical experience has enabled him to be actively involved in Training, including Examination boards, national training committees, and national bodies.
Alan has regularly lectured in his areas of special interest both at home and overseas. In addition he provides clinical opinion to overseas colleagues and has operated regularly abroad during the past 8 years.
