Dr Lawton graduated from Manchester University in 1990. After a range of junior posts, she specialised in obstetrics and gynaecology working in hospitals in Greater Manchester. She worked as a clinical research fellow funded by the Medical Research Council in urogynaecology at the University of Manchester and St. Mary’s Hospital. During this post, she worked on major multi-centre trial of laparoscopic surgery for urinary incontinence. She gained an MD for her thesis on sexual function in women with urinary incontinence based on this research trial. This experience lead to a sub-specialist training post in urogynaecology at Liverpool Women’s Hospital. She now works as a Consultant at Salford Royal Foundation Trust (Hope Hospital) where much of her workload is in urogynaecology.
Dr Lawton lives in South Manchester. She enjoys outdoor activities particularly clay pigeon shooting, gardening and ski-ing. She is also likes hunting for a bargain at antique fairs.
