Dr Walker first qualified in medicine from Glasgow University and trained in paediatrics fro two years before going on to training in anaesthesia in the North West. He became a member of the Royal College of Anaesthetists in 1989 and then started as a Consultant in Paediatric Anaesthesia at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital in 1993.
Since then he has set up a paediatric pain service and developed a great interest in difficult intubation techniques in children.
