Using donated eggs

Egg donation may offer the only chance of conception for women who produce too few eggs, poor quality eggs, no eggs, or eggs that are unsuitable for genetic reasons.

The London Fertility Centre is able to provide donor eggs to women up to the age of 49

London Fertility Centre recruits egg donors within the UK, however the number of egg donors has reduced since the removal of donor anonimity in 2005. Therefore, LFC operates overseas egg donation services in conjunction with reputable overseas centres who perform the same screening as in the UK. See the boxes below for more information about UK and overseas egg donors.

What is involved in using donated eggs at the London Fertility Centre?

A patient/couple requesting egg donation will be seen at the London Fertility Centre (UK) for consultation, physical examination, ultrasound and screening. Recipients must receive implications counselling to discuss and explore the implications of receiving donation.

London Fertility Centre has an upper age limit for recipients of 49 complete years, i.e. you must not have reached your 50th birthday at the time of the embryo transfer, for treatment using fresh donated eggs.

Using donor eggs from the UK

Altruistic Donation
Children born from egg, sperm or embryo donation have the right to enquire to HFEA when they reach the age of 18 as to whether their existence has resulted from treatment using donated eggs, sperm or embryos. Donor-conceived people may apply to the HFEA to receive identifying information about their donors. The recipients will receive only non-identifying information about the donor at the time of treatment. In an altruistic donation arrangement (anonymous at the time of treatment), the donor and the recipient do not meet.

Donors are in short supply in the UK and we are constantly advertising on behalf of our recipients to reduce our waiting times. When a suitable donor is found, we will provide you with as much information as confidentiality and the current HFEA guidelines permit.

Pool Donation
You may know someone under the age of 36, who would like to help you by donating her eggs, but does not wish to donate directly to yourself. She can donate to an unknown recipient from our programme and once she has completed her treatment a donor will be offered to you as soon as a suitable match is available. However, please be aware this may take some time.

Known Donation
If you know someone ideally under the age of 36 (friend or relative) who would be willing to help you directly, you can bring them to the centre for a consultation. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) also requires all donors and recipients to be matched according to their CMV (Cytomegalovirus) status, therefore we require both recipient and donor to have a CMV blood test before attending for consultation.

Using donor eggs from overseas

Patients opting for the overseas programmes can be reassured that egg collection, fertilisation, embryo screening and embryo transfer will be performed by fertility specialists and embryologists trained either in Britain or in other European Community countries.

London Fertility Centre (UK) will monitor and manage your treatment to prepare you for embryo transfer which will then take place in Spain.

IVI Alicante
Egg donation was authorized by Spanish legislation in 1988 (35 / 1988 Act, 22 November) and donations must be voluntary, anonymous and non lucrative. Following the law, donors must be over 18 and under 35 years of age. They are selected according to very strict medical criteria.

The IVI Alicante egg donation program is based on a continuous flow of egg donors. Every time a donation is confirmed, a selection according to physical characteristics (photographs) is performed among the recipients who are already prepared with oestrogens. If there are several matching patients, the one that has been on oestrogens the longer is assigned. Please note that you will be given no information regarding your assigned donor until after your embryo transfer.
