My private practice reflects my NHS clinical practice and I aim to provide a first class service with an emphasis on disorders of the nose and sinuses. In addition to my specialist expertise I also provide a general ENT service that is essential to the local community.
I qualified in Sheffield in 1977 and started my surgical training in Bristol before starting as a Registrar in Liverpool in 1982. I was MRC research fellow and Senior Registrar in Liverpool, starting as a Consultant at Walton Hospital in 1989.
I started to develop endoscopic sinus surgery in Walton Hospital in 1989 and at the time was one of a small number of surgeons to do this within the UK. This is now an established technique that is taught to all trainees. Sinus surgery has continued to progress and frontal sinus disease can now be approached in most cases endonasally.
As a rhinologist the main bulk of the work is treating patients with nasal obstruction with conditions such as nasal polyps, rhinitis and septal deformity. More specialist problems include managing difficult sinusitis, nasal deformity, repairing CSF leaks and nasal tumours.
Outside of my professional life I have a very full family life with Sharon, my very supportive wife and with 4 ‘not-so-small’ children – Claire, Peter, and twins, David & Matthew. Claire is now a trainee GP in Liverpool. Sharon works hard not only to run and organize the family, but is also my practice manager. We spend many weekends walking in the Lake District. I also sail a GP14 at West Kirkby with Sharon. In more quiet moments at home I play the piano. We spend holidays skiing in the winter and sailing in the summer.
