I grew up on the Wirral, qualified in medicine in 1979 from Oxford University and gained experience in the UK, Canada and Australia in a variety of hospital specialities.
I intended specialising as a physician when a growing interest in complementary medicine, particularly homeopathy, led to a career change.
Since 1989 I have combined being a GP with working in the Liverpool Department of Homeopathic Medicine (LDHM) whilst undertaking courses and gaining the Membership of the Faculty of Homeopathy in 1990 and being elected a Fellow in 2000.
I became a consultant in homeopathy in 2004 and the department’s clinical director in 2009. As a result of NHS re-organisation LDHM was closed and a new homeopathy service commissioned.
I established a community interest company, The Liverpool Medical Homeopathy Service in partnership with a former colleague from the LDHM, Dr Sue de Lacy, to continue to provide homeopathy treatments via the NHS and private routes.
My other interest in complementary medicine is in Iscador, a mistletoe based therapy used to treat cancer. Iscador was introduced into clinical practice in the 1920’s by Rudolph Steiner and is in widespread use in Switzerland and Germany. I am concerned to see that complementary treatments are use appropriately in conjunction with conventional treatments, and feel that my continual involvement in General Practice enables integration of homeopathic medicines alongside conventional treatments.
