One Stop Carpal Tunnel Clinic

Spire Liverpool Hospital and the Bone and Joint Centre which provides all types of orthopaedic surgery, is pleased to announce the launch of a dedicated one stop carpal tunnel clinic from September 2010. The clinic provides all the necessary investigations to confirm the diagnosis and start the first part of your treatment. Alternatively, if a different diagnosis is made, a recommendation for further treatment will be made. If carpal tunnel is confirmed and surgery is recommended, it will be possible for this to be completed the same day.

We manage all aspects of your treatment from diagnosis through to rehabilitation

Mr Daniel Brown MBCHB, FRCS is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in wrist, and hand surgery regularly treats Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in our fully equipped theatres. He is a member of the Bone and Joint Centre. He works closely with a specialist hand Physiotherapist to manage all aspects of your treatment from diagnosis through to rehabilitation. You can be assured of the most expert and tailor-made service.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a common condition that occurs when there is too much pressure on a nerve in the wrist. This debilitating condition may result in pain, numbness or tingling of the thumb, fingers an hand.

How does the One Stop Carpal Tunnel Clinic operate?

You will first be seen and assessed in the outpatients department by a nurse who will ask you to complete a short questionnaire. Your responses will be analysed and the score will determine whether you require nerve conduction studies to confirm the diagnosis. The nerve conduction test will take a couple minutes in the outpatients department. Small sensors will be place onto you arm and a reading will take place.

Following this assessment you will then be seen by your consultant for a consultation and examination. If your consultant confirms you have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome treatment options will be discussed. If surgery is required, you will be offered the option of having this on the same day. If your consultant suspects an alternative diagnosis you may require additional investigations, such as an X-ray.

The final part of your visit will be to see a specialist hand therapist. The therapist will look at the information gathered over your appointment and provide you with advice/and or treatment as appropriate to your diagnosis. This may include fitting you with a splint. If surgery is planned the therapist will provide you with detailed personalised advice regarding your rehabilitation. A report will be sent to your GP following your consultation giving a summary of findings and full recommendations.

What happens if I require surgery?

Following your outpatient consultation, if you require surgery, you will be offered an appointment on the same day. Alternative arrangements can be made if this is more convenient.

How much does it cost?

The above package will cost £395 this includes the outpatient fee for the consultant, your nerve conduction test (if applicable) and your initial appointment with the hand therapist. It may be your consultant or hand therapist recommends splints as part of your management programme.

These splints range in price and are not included in the cost of the clinic as quoted above. If you require surgery there will be an additional fee, this includes the surgeon’s fee, the hospital day case costs and a follow up consultation fee.
