Your consultations

For your appointments, you’ll meet your consultant in one of our 20 consultation rooms. All of our rooms are accessible, making things easier if you find walking difficult prior to knee replacement.

Our dedicated orthopaedic consultants specialise in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal (bone and muscle) conditions. Here’s what will happen before your treatment:

• If you haven’t been diagnosed yet, your consultant may recommend our advanced scanning, imaging and diagnostic technologies to look at your knee and help them understand the cause of your pain or mobility problems
• Once you’ve been diagnosed or if you have a referral, your consultant will then discuss treatment options with you
• Before recommending a knee replacement, they may suggest hydrocortisone joint injections or knee arthroscopy first

Your consultations give you an opportunity to ask questions and discuss your expectations, needs and desires. Your consultant will then be able to outline a treatment and care plan that’s tailored to you.

When you come in for your operation, you’ll be with us for two to three days. You’ll stay in one of our large, bright, private en-suite rooms which has a locked space for your belongings and entertainment to keep you occupied as you start your recovery.

Here’s what will happen on the day of your knee replacement operation:

• You’ll meet your surgery team and anaesthetist
• Your anaesthetist will administer the type of anaesthetic that you’ve agreed with your consultant – either a general, where you’re asleep, or a spinal or epidural, where you won’t feel anything below the waist
• Once it’s taken effect, your surgeon will make an incision in your knee, move your kneecap to one side and begin fitting your artificial knee

After your operation, you’ll begin recovery in your private room. Your room will have:

You’ll have support from our nursing team, who can provide pain relief to help manage any discomfort after your knee replacement surgery.
