Professor Shah is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon based at the Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre and Good Hope Hospital. His sub-specialist areas of interest are glaucoma and small incision cataract surgery. He was senior registrar, then glaucoma fellow at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.

He leads an active research programme looking at the causes, management and impact of glaucoma in Birmingham. Professor Shah has also written three ophthalmology textbooks, 'Eye disease in clinical practice - a concise colour atlas' and 'Key topics in ophthalmology' and 'The ABC of eyes' (4th edition).

Professor Shah was born and educated in Birmingham and is an "Old Edwardian". His interests include squash, tennis, classical music, walking and mountainering. He is married to a dermatologist and has three children.
