After graduating from The Queen's Universiry of Belfast Mr Cartmill did his pre-membership training in the Belfast Teaching Hospitals. His post-membership training was at St James' (Jimmys) University hospital and The Hessop Hospital for Women, Sheffield before taking up a consultant post at Good Hope hospital in Sutton Coldfield.

Mr Richard Cartmill offers a full gynaecological service with a special interest in minimal access surgery. He has extensive experience with diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy and treatments for excessive menstrual bleeding and introduced uterine balloon ablation to Spire Little Aston Hospital. Mr Cartmill has an interest in pelvic pain and laparoscopic treatment of endometriosis. He is a certified colposcopist with BSCCP and offer colposcopy services. In his NHS practice he runs a menopause service and offer advice on all forms of HRT.

He has a strong interest in training and is a college tutor in obstetrics and gynaecology and also post graduate clinical tutor at Good Hope hospital. Mr Cartmill also writes for a womens health web site on common gynaecological conditions. The site can be accessed at http://www.medicdirect.co.uk
