Mr John Oates qualified in 1979 and has worked in Birmingham, Nottingham and Derby before taking up his current post with Burton Hospitals NHS Trust. 

He is the Director of Medical Education for medicdirect, a medical website, and was a visiting professor to the University of South Georgia in 2000.

In addition to a busy general adult and paediatric ENT practice Mr Oates has a special interest in otology. As a UK pioneer for the use of lasers in the treatment of middle ear disease he has the largest current UK series of otosclerosis treated using this modality. 

He is an elected representative of his colleagues at a local and national level and has developed close educational and clinical ties with clinicians in Europe and North America. Mr Oates is committed to delivering education and information to trainees, consultant colleagues, GPs and patients via local courses, the internet and digital media. 

Mr Oates co-ordinates respected courses in the West Midlands, North Wales and France and is co-author of OTO-ROM 2, a set of educational CD-ROM's which took two first prizes at the International Medical Films Festival.
