Podiatric surgery commenced in 1975. The dedicate branch is allied to medicine rather than formerly a medically taught subject. We are therefore not practising medical doctors. Most podiatric surgeons in England practice through the NHS, there are now over 50 consultants in this popular speciality where qualification has been extended to include medical training in foot surgery.
Following a career as a Podiatrist (1978 - 1985) Mr Tollafield became a full time lecturer in Podiatric Orthopaedics. As Deputy Head of School he set up the first student integrated service in foot surgery between the undergraduates and postgraduates in Northampton and co-authored two text books.Mr Tollafield was one of the first full time consultant in podiatric surgery in 1995 in the UK.
His main area of concern is foot deformity of which the first toe (bunion) is most commonly managed. He see's his main role as a diagnostician helping to find the best solution for his patients to solve their foot and ankle pain by conservative or surgical means. He offers patients management with local or general anaesthesia to suite their personal and medical needs
Mr Tollafield is a keen family man who lives locally in the Midlands with his wife of 30 years, he has four children and four grandchildren.His interests vary between writing, music, theatre, zoology and studying military history of the early 20th century. He is a keen sailor for a while he was involved in exploring the south west of England along its intense coastline.As a memeber of the National Trust he likes to explore his heritage whenever possible.
