Dr Petkova has been employed as a Consultant Respiratory and General Medicine Physician at Good Hope Hospital since November 2003. She is trained in the management of a wide range of respiratory conditions including: Bronchial asthma; COPD; respiratory infections including Tuberculosis (TB), Pneumonia, and Bronchiectasis; Pleural diseases; Interstitial lung diseases; Lung cancer; management of patients with sleep related disorders.
Dr Petkova is experienced in bronchoscopy including performing Broncho-alveolar lavage (BAL) and transbronchial biopsies. She initiated and played a major role in developing Endobronchial Ulrasound (EBUS) guided Tansbronchal needle aspiration (TBNA) service within the trust. EBUS-TBNA is a safe and more technologically advanced technique for diagnosing and staging of lung cancer, and evaluation of mediastinal or hilar lesions. She runs a rapid access clinic for patients with suspected TB.
Most of the patients attending her outpatient clinics have chronic airways diseases including Interstitial lung disease, Asthma, COPD, and Bronchiectasis. She is interested particularly in COPD complicated by Respiratory Failure. Dr Petkova played a major role in developing a ward based Non-invasive Ventilation (NIV) service at Good Hope Hospital. She is also experienced in chest ultrasound and respiratory physiology. As a College tutor she is greatly involved in Undergraduate and Postgraduate Teaching.
Since early childhood Dr Petkova has a daily routine. That helps her maintain a balance between busy moments and free time. In her spare hours she enjoys long walks with her family and friends, reading, and travelling. Dr Petkova likes watching movies, musicals, and figure skating, dancing, singing and fashion shows. Her hobbies keep her physically and mentally fit and widen my social contacts.
