New hip centre opens at Spire Little Aston Hospital

13th March 2008

A radical new approach to hip surgery is now on offer at the Minimal Invasive Surgery Centre of Excellence which opened this week at Spire Little Aston Hospital in Birmingham.

Pioneering UK surgeon Mr Gursharan Chana opened the centre where he will be treating patients with a new minimally invasive hip replacement operation that means less scarring and pain for patients and means they will be up and about quicker after surgery.

The ground-breaking procedure in hip replacement and hip resurfacing surgery reduces the incision size to just 5.5-9cm, from the conventional hip surgery approach size of up to 30cm.

Mr Chana said: “The new treatment is not only cosmetically pleasing to the patient but affords a range of extensive benefits including minimal blood loss, quicker mobilisation post surgery and less pain. The procedure is of benefit to older patients facing total hip replacement and younger patients who require hip resurfacing.”

Peter Yates, from the West Midlands, one of Mr Chana’s patients who had hip surgery using the new technique at Spire Little Aston Hospital said: “Before the operation I suffered terrible pain and was not able to work for two years. This surgery has meant I don’t have to give it a second thought anymore, I treat the hips like my own.” Find out more about Mr Chana
