Procedures offered for hip replacement surgery at Spire Leicester Hospital

At Spire Leicester Hospital, we have extensive experience of performing hip replacement surgery in our high-quality facilities. All of our orthopaedic operations take place in a theatre with a laminar flow system that regulates air flow to reduce the risk of infection.

If your consultant thinks it’s right for you, they may offer:

  • Traditional (posterior) hip replacement – performed by the surgeon making an incision of roughly 8 to 10 inches along the side of the hip to access the hip joint
  • Minimally invasive hip replacement – this usually means a faster recovery time while still achieving the same outcomes
  • Anterior hip replacement surgery, when incisions are made in the front of the hip, resulting in less pain and faster recovery than with traditional surgery

Your consultations

You'll have all your consultations in one of our 21 ground floor consulting rooms, making things easier if you find walking difficult. During your consultation, we'll:

  • Ask about your medical history
  • Say whether you need any blood tests or an X-ray, MRI or CT scan so that your hip can be examined in more detail
  • Tell you about the different types of artificial hip joints – also called prosthesis – and discuss the most suitable surgical approach for you
  • Explain about the different anaesthetic options
  • Discuss the potential risks and complications and how they may affect you
  • Give you a chance to ask any questions you have about your surgery

Both your initial consultation and tests at this stage are charged separately to the cost of any treatment needed. Once you’ve decided to go ahead with hip surgery, you’ll be invited to attend our Joint School for a pre-assessment where you will meet our clinical team who will explain your surgery and recovery plan.

Hip replacement: your procedure

On the day of your procedure, our ward staff will show you to one of our en-suite single rooms and get you settled in.

You’ll meet your consultant and anaesthetist who’ll prepare you for your operation.

Anaesthetic options

You’ll probably have a general anaesthetic, so you’ll be completely asleep. However, sometimes it’s preferable or necessary to have a spinal or epidural anaesthetic, where you’re numb from the waist down. If so, your anaesthetist can also give you sedatives to make you feel more relaxed.

During your operation

Your consultant will make the necessary incisions, remove your worn or damaged hip joint and then replace it with an artificial joint. The hip replacement procedure usually takes from an hour to an hour and a half.

For more information, you can head to our main hip replacement surgery page.

Hip replacement surgery: your recovery

Once your operation is finished, you’ll be taken back to your private room to start your recovery. You may feel some discomfort and swelling at first, which is completely normal. We’ll give you pain relief to help make sure you’re comfortable.

You'll have easy access to the nurse call system and many of the comforts and conveniences you’d expect to find in your own home, including:

  • Armchair
  • En-suite bathroom
  • Telephone
  • TV/radio
  • Wardrobe space and a small locker
  • Wi-Fi

You can expect to be with us for three to five days.

As soon as you feel ready, your physiotherapist will help you get up and about, while our nursing team will be on-hand to make sure you’re as comfortable as possible.

Every recovery is different. Your consultant will be able to advise you on your personal expectations.

When you go home, you'll be given a phone number to contact a member of the team if you have any queries about your recovery. We'll make appointments for you to come back to the hospital to see the nursing and physiotherapy teams. You’ll return to Spire Leicester after six weeks to see your consultant who will check that your hip is healing correctly, your recovery is on track and you’re managing any remaining discomfort.
