Mr McCarthy is a full time practising vascular specialist who deals with both arterial and venous disease. He qualified in Medicine from the University of Birmingham and moved to Leicester to undertake research in the field of vascular surgery. He then became a clinical lecturer at the University of Leicester and completed his training in 2002. He is now part of a highly succesful vascular unit based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary which is recognised both nationally and internatuionally as a centre of excellence. In any given month he will see over 150 patients per month in both NHS and private sector. Mr McCarthy is recognised as specialist within his field and is reffered patients with both arterial and venous disease from all over Midlands region. He has pioneered the use of mimimally invasive varicose vein surgery in Leicestershire.
Vascular surgery is a large part of Mr McCarthy's life and is a discipline that requires physical and mental fitness. This well being is maintained by spending as much time with his family as possible and also pursing varied hobbies; these including cycling, mountaineering, tennis, member of the RSC, men's welfare, golf, fly fishing and learning and teaching martial arts (which he does with his children).
As well as being a committed practising surgeon he his also a dedicated surgical trainer and currently supervises over forty surgical trainees in their chosen careers. Mr McCarthy is also involved with surgical training in Gondor, Ethopia.
