Weight loss and metabolic surgery
Mechanisms involved in upper gastrointestinal cancer
Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (Base Hospital Leicester Royal Infirmary)
Royal College of Surgeons of England, Association of Upper Gastro-intestinal Surgeons, British Obesity and Metabolic Surgical Society,International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity
I studied Medicine at the University of Wales College of Medicine and qualified in 1993. After undertaking my junior surgical training in South Wales, I moved to Leicester and completed both my senior surgical training and a higher degree in cancer research. My interests and expertise are weight loss surgery, upper gastrointestinal surgery and hernia repairs - both laparoscopic and open- end endoscopy, in addition to minor surgical procedures. To further these skills, I spent a year gaining specialist experience in Upper Gastrointestinal and Obesity Surgery in the University Hospitals of Leeds under the supervision of international experts in these fields. I was awarded the first British Obesity Surgical Society Bariatric Surgical Fellowship in the UK and hold a certificate in Laparoscopic Obesity Surgery from the European School of Laparoscopic Surgery in Brussels. I gained expertise in laparoscopic gastric cancer surgery during my time in Leeds and by visiting the Cancer Institute Hospital of the Japanese Foundation For Cancer Research in Tokyo.
