I am an Australian-born adult neurologist with a specialist interest in acute neurological disease and in neuromuscular disorders. My basic medical training was in Germany and in the UK. I was accredited as a Neurologist in 1992 and subsequently subspecialised in Neurological Intensive Care and in Neuromuscular Disease and took up a career as an academic neurologist in Germany. I was Director of the Neurological Critical Care Unit at the University of Dresden, and vice chairman of the Department of Neurology. In 2001 I returned to the UK as a consultant neurologist at the University Hospitals of Leicester, where I established a Muscle Disease service and helped design the acute neurology service. I have been involved in developing critical care neurology in the UK and founded the Special Interest Group in the Association of British Neurologists, for whom I continue to provide specialist postgraduate training regularly. For clinical research reasons I recently moved to the Cambridge University Hospitals Neurocritical Care Unit, where I am now based for inpatient services, and also provide a specialist outpatient clinic for Inflammatory Muscle Disease and Difficult Myasthenia. I also run a specialist clinic for adult Genetic Muscle Disease at the RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry.
I was born in Hobart, Tasmania but have lived in Europe and the UK since 1972. I am married (my wife is also a neurologist) with 4 children. My main private interests are outdoor activities and travel, as well as equestrian sports, in which the whole family are active.
