Professor Simon Kay was listed in The Times' Good Surgeon Guide on 10 December 2011.

Professor Kay and Spire Leeds Hospital played a leading role in the reconstructive surgery of Harry Berger, one of Derrick Bird's shooting victims in Cumbria on 2 June 2010.

Following his initial treatments in Carlisle, Harry was taken to Spire Leeds hospital where Professor Kay removed a section of muscle from the side of Harry's torso and used it to rebuild his arm muscles. Much of this kind of reconstructive plastic surgery owes its development to "the lesson from Belfast and Afghanistan," according to Professor Kay.
