I am a Consultant General Physician and Gastroenterologist at Spire Leeds Hospital and St James’s University Hospital. My clinical practice is mainly gastroenterological and I undertake both upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy. I am happy to see private patients without an initial referral from their general practitioner.

I am particularly interested in the investigation and management of dyspepsia, swallowing disorders, functional abdominal symptoms/irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis), non-inflammatory small bowel and colonic disease (polyps, cancer), obscure diarrhoeal disorders, and chronic constipation.

After graduating from Leeds School of Medicine, I received specialist training while working on a number of major gastroenterology units in Manchester (1974-1978), Newcastle upon Tyne (1978-1982) and Yale University (1980-1983). I have held consultant posts since 1983 (MRC Senior Clinical Fellow, Newcastle and Manchester 1983-1989); Senior Lecturer in Medicine, Manchester 1989-1998), moving to Leeds in 1998 and becoming Professor of Clinical Science in 2000.

I retired from the University of Leeds in 2016 and became Emeritus Professor of Clinical Science, and still pursue gastrointestinal research in the University, collaborating with local colleagues and others in the USA and Germany. I was elected a Fellow of the American Association of Gastroenterology in 2007 for outstanding contributions to research in gastroenterology. Since 2016, I have been a locum consultant gastroenterologist within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

Allied to my clinical practice, I supervise laboratory research into the mechanisms and pharmacological control of diarrhoeal disorders in the Leeds Institute for Medical Research at St James’s, Leeds. My current score on ResearchGate (42.91) is higher than 97.5% of other ResearchGate members. Since 2000 I have been a clinical examiner for the Royal College of Physicians, London.
