    Background Information
    Professional profile:
Having graduated and awarded a post-graduate degree in Surgery at Trivandrum, India, Mr Unni Nair's cardiac training in the UK was completed at centres such as London Chest Hospital, Harefield, Hammersmith, Killingbeck, Manchester Royal Infirmary and Wythenshawe Hospital.

Mr Nair was appointed as a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon in Leeds and did the first cardiac transplantation at Killingbeck Hospital in June 1989, the patient surviving more than 20 years. Mr Nair's other contributions to cardiac surgery include the introduction of minimally invasive cardiac operations, mitral valve repair with patient specific rings, endarterectomy of severely atheromatous coronary artery, arterialisation of cardiac veins in inoperable coronary arteries and heart failure surgery by left ventricular volume restoration. In October 1997, Mr Nair's NHS base moved to the new cardiothoracic centre at Leeds General Infirmary following the merger of the two units in Leeds.

Mr Nair believes cardiac surgery can benefit from the development of technology. Best cosmetic and functional results are achieved when cardiac operations are performed through limited sternal split. Complete re-vascularisation is accomplished in certain cases only if it is possible to remove extensive atheroma. The surgical technique should be modified to the needs and conditions of the individual patients to get the best possible outcome.
    Personal profile:
Music, reading, painting, computers, golf, musicals and theatre are Mr Unni Nair's areas of interest.
