    Professional profile:
    I was educated at Balliol College, Oxford and Guy's Hospital, London. My general surgical training was in Sheffield, followed by seven years training in cardiothoracic surgery at the Royal Brompton, National Heart and London Chest hospital. This also included one year at the Oregon Health Sciences Univeristy where I worked with Professor Albert Starr, the pioneer of heart valve replacement.
    Personal profile:
    I was born in York and therefore delighted to return to Leeds in 1987. I am a keen sportsman and enjoy golf, offshore racing and skiing.
