    Professional profile:

    Mr Mark Emerton qualified in 1988 after training at Oxford University medical school. Following basic surgical training he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (London) in 1992. 

    His specialist orthopaedic training was at the Nuffield orthopaedic centre in Oxford where he was University Clinical Lecturer for 6 years including 2 years of specialist training in hip and knee surgery.

    Mr Emerton was appointed as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon, with a special interest in hip and knee surgery, at the Leeds General Infirmary in July 1999.

    Since becoming a consultant in Leeds Mr Emerton has spent 3 years as clinical director leading the development and opening of the new elective orthopaedic centre at Chapel Allerton hospital. He was the national clinical lead for hip and knee surgery at the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement until March 2007 and now works with Patient Safety First, a national campaign to improve the safety and quality of healthcare, as the clinical lead for safer surgery.
