Mr Kostas Papagiannopoulos is a cardiothoracic surgeon practising mainly thoracic surgery. He enjoys all aspects of thoracic surgery with a main interest in keyhole (minimally invasive-VATS) surgery.

Mr Kostas Papagiannopoulos qualified in 1990 in Greece and spent 8 years in South Africa where he qualified as a cardiothoracic surgeon with extensive experience in chest trauma. He spent one year in Royal Brompton Hospital, London, followed by another year in Belgium where he trained in oesophageal surgery with Professor Tony Lerut. Mr Kostas Papagiannopoulos was appointed as a consultant thoracic surgeon in 2001 in Leeds.

Mr Kostas Papagiannopoulos has been the Clinical Director of Thoracic Surgery since 2006 and has played a pivotal role in developing thoracic surgery in Leeds and transforming the thoracic department into one of the largest regional centres in the UK and Europe.

Mr Kostas Papagiannopoulos treats surgically all benign and malignant conditions of the chest but hasa special interest in lung cancer, metastatic cancer from other organs (breast, bowel, kidney and sarcoma), mesothelioma, pectus deformities, malignant conditions of the chest wall and airway (windpipe) conditions. A large part of his practice includes keyhole surgery for benign and malignant conditions of the chest.

He also undertakes Endobronchial Valve Surgery (a minimally invasive procedure) for patients with emphysema.

Mr Kostas Papagiannopoulos has a great interest in developing minimally invasive (key hole) treatment of atrial fibrillation.
