Background Information
Professional profile:
Patients with suspected heart problems need to know the details of the condition and its severity, but they also want to understand the mechanisms of their symptoms. A clear explanation helps alleviate worry, and thereby often leads to improvements in quality of life. Dr Klaus Witte feels strongly that as much time in a consultation should be given to explanation of the condition and planning the treatment as in making the diagnosis. Dr Witte encourages family members to join in the consultation, if the patient agrees, to allow them to ask their own questions.

Dr Witte has worked in cardiology centres in London, Cardiff, Hull, Leeds and Toronto and has gained experience in all aspects of cardiology. His particular interest is in heart failure and pacemakers (and implantable defibrillators). Heart failure is a condition where as a result of hypertension, angina, valve problems, or previous heart attacks, the heart muscle is weakened. Patients frequently experience breathlessness or fatigue. With the correct treatment, often a combination of tablets, rehabilitation and sometimes a special pacemaker, deterioration can be prevented and the heart muscle function can be improved. Since the symptoms of heart failure can be non-specific Dr Witte is pleased to see patients with palpitations, breathlessness, fatigue, or chest pain.
Personal profile:
Dr Klaus Witte was born in Ireland to German parents. He grew up in Bath and trained in London. He has been living and working in Leeds since 2003. Dr Witte's research interests and work at the University of Leeds keeps him fairly busy, but in his spare time he enjoys gardening and running (he can often be found pounding the streets of Headingley and West Park). Dr Witte takes part in local road races and enjoys travelling through Europe and the UK.
