Professional profile:

I studied medicine at the University of Liverpool, qualifying in 1974 with an MBCHB Hons degree. I did my House jobs on the Professorial Medical and Surgical Units. This was followed by various junior hospital posts, gaining experience in general surgery, general medicine, psychiatry and casualty medicine. I passed the MRCP examination in London in 1978. From 1979-82 I was a senior research fellow in diabetes at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London. I was awarded the Degree of MD from the University of Liverpool in 1983 for a research thesis on the causes of diabetic complications.

After that I moved to Leeds where I was a Senior Registrar in general medicine, diabetes and endocrinology and then Consultant Physician in general internal medicine and diabetes at Leeds General Infirmary. In 1995 I was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London (FRCP). Until 2006, I was the Clinical Director for diabetes and endocrinology for Leeds Teaching Hospitals (NHS) Trust.

My clinical work involves acute general medicine, having to diagnose and treat patients with various undiagnosed conditions. My specialist field is diabetes and I have referrals from across the North of England and from abroad. I am particularly experienced in difficult diabetic cases, where diabetic control has been troublesome. Within the field of diabetes, I have special expertise in treating high blood pressure, lipid disorders, diabetic complications and male sexual dysfunction.

I am the author of over 100 papers, chapters, reviews and books on diabetic topics. I am the series editor of Recent Advances in Diabetes.

Personal profile:

I am married with four children and my wife is a barrister, specialising in family law. I enjoy spending time with my family, walking in the Dales and visiting antique fairs.
