Background Information
Professional profile:

Dr John Hamlin is a graduate of Leeds University where he spent five happy years as an undergraduate. As a result Dr Hamlin has not strayed far from Yorkshire, having completed his postgraduate training at York, Bradford and the majority of time in Leeds as a lecturer in Gastroenterology.

Dr John Hamlin completed a PhD on genetic aspects of inflammatory bowel disease as an MRC Research Fellow in the molecular medicine unit before completing his clinical training. He was subsequently appointed as a consultant at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in 2005 where he is the lead clinician for inflammatory bowel disease.

Dr Hamlin has extensive experience in colonoscopy including as a designated colonoscopist on the national bowel cancer screening programme. He performs all modalities of therapeutic endoscopy including polypectomy, EMR, dilatation of strictures (eg in Crohn’s disease) and colonic stent placement in obstructing cancers. Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) is a technique to remove large or small flat polyps that may otherwise require surgical resection. Dr Hamlin’s upper GI endoscopy (gastroscopy) skills include all aspects of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including oesophageal dilatations of strictures, endoscopic nasojejunal tube placement and Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy insertions. He also has wide experience in endoscopic treatment of upper GI bleeding including the modalities of oesophageal variceal injection and banding, gastric variceal histoacryl glue injections, argon beam coagulation, adrenaline injections and haemostatic clipping of bleeding lesions.

Personal profile:

Dr John Hamlin's interests outside of medicine revolve around family, friends and sport. Having hung up his cricket and football boots, Dr Hamlin is working hard at improving his golf whenever possible.
