September 2009 marks the 20th year anniversary of one of the region’s largest and best known private hospitals.
Spire Leeds Hospital, still known locally as Roundhay Hall, opened to patients in 1989. Sited in the beautiful setting of the 19th century hall close to Roundhay Park, the hospital construction team undertook extensive re-furbishment to ensure the hall retained its full grandeur whilst developing modern-day medical facilities for the population of Yorkshire and beyond.
In celebration, the hospital is opening its doors to the public on Sunday September 13th between 10am and 12pm as part of the Leeds Civic Trust National Heritage Open Day, which gives the public opportunity to view Heritage Buildings with special historical interest.
Over the course of the last 20 years, the hospital has become renowned both nationally and internationally for its range of services across more than 20 medical and surgical specialties. It has treated more than 800,000 patients and offers services for adults and children.
Considered to be a centre of excellence for a number of specialties including oncology, general surgery, orthopaedic surgery and cosmetic surgery, Spire Leeds continues to grow. The hospital supports many local charities across the region, and attracts specialist consultants from Harrogate, Leeds, Bradford, Airedale and York.
Dr Gordon Williams, consultant cardiologist and one of the first consultants to join the hospital said: “I was involved with the hospital at the planning and development stages and I have worked here on a regular basis since it opened. It was one of the first private hospitals in the region to perform complex heart surgery and over the years, it has continued to develop and keep up with the latest technology. It is a pleasure to work here - I can give my patients one-to-one care and I have the support of an excellent hospital team”.
In addition, Spire Leeds Hospital now supports the local NHS trusts by providing access to NHS patients for a range of NHS-funded services including gynaecology, general surgery, orthopaedic surgery and thoracic surgery.
Investment in the hospital’s services and facilities continues at a pace with the opening this year of the hospital’s “cardiac ablation” theatre, treating patients from all over the region for heart rhythm problems, and a brand new cancer suite opening in October 2009
