I’m Liz Tottie and I’m the Theatre Manager at Spire Cheshire Hospital.
I’m proud of being part of this hospital and I feel like it is part of me
I started my career with a large NHS trust in Cheshire as an RGN in Theatre, and had a friend who worked in Spire Cheshire hospital (which was then a Bupa hospital) who encouraged me to consider a move. I remember being impressed with the working environment and the atmosphere, and it still has that feeling for me today.
Now as the Theatre Manager I have a team of 40 and work alongside around 65 consultants regularly in Theatre. What I like best about my job is the variety I face in terms of the range of people I deal with and the tasks and challenges of the role.
I still use my clinical skills in theatre but the majority of my time is spent ensuring the consultants needs are being met, and managing my team. I focus a lot on clinical competences, skills development and team building, and I’m really proud of the fact that we have a strong, stable and happy team. As a longstanding team we work together to be flexible and there is a lot of goodwill on both sides. I believe this is why we are so successful.
I feel privileged to have been invited to be part of the senior management team in the hospital, in which I am part of the strategic business planning process and also deputise for Matron. It adds a different dimension to my role and I’m fascinated by the wider hospital perspective it offers.
At Spire Cheshire we believe in working hard but also having fun and that ethos starts with the senior management team. In our hospital its fast paced and complex so its important for our hospital staff’s well being that we try and keep a balance.
